Tintwistle Moor - Major Incident Update 25 July

Here is today's update from our colleagues at Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service relating to the ongoing wildfire at Tintwistle Moor.

Firefighters and partner agencies continue to make progress in response to the wildfire on Tintwistle Moor. It remains classified as a Major Incident, with crews maintaining a significant presence as work continues to contain the fire and reduce the risk of re-ignition.

Operations remain ongoing across four sectors - Didsbury Intake, Featherbed Moss, Arnfield Moor and Crowden - with crews continuing to strengthen containment measures through the creation and maintenance of fire breaks, trenches and hose systems.

These measures are helping to prevent further fire spread and support efforts to extinguish deep-seated hotspots across the affected area.

The wildfire remains a large and complex incident (see update published Friday 24 July) as challenging terrain and deep-burning peat continue to present difficulties for crews. Significant work remains underway to bring the incident fully under control, but forecast rainfall overnight is expected to support firefighting operations and assist crews by dampening the moorland.

Road Closures and Public Safety

The A628 remains closed to allow firefighters, emergency services partners and specialist vehicles to operate safely in and around the incident area. We would like to thank residents, businesses and motorists for their continued patience and cooperation.

With the summer holidays now underway and more people expected to visit the countryside, we are also reminding the public to remain vigilant and help reduce the risk of wildfires. Please avoid lighting fires or using disposable barbecues, dispose of smoking materials responsibly, take litter home, and report any signs of fire by calling 999 immediately.

The aerial images (below), captured this morning by Derby Mountain Rescue Team, provide a glimpse of the devastation caused by the wildfire near the Pennine Way and Rakes Moss, showing only a small section of the affected area.
